  • What is an attack’s “effect”?
    It is the effect a move has, such as inflicting a Special Condition on the opponent’s Pokémon.
  • What does "Retreat" mean?
    A Pokémon retreating means it switches places with a Benched Pokémon. In order for a Pokémon to retreat to the Bench, you must discard from it Energy equal to its Retreat Cost. After making a Pokémon retreat to the Bench, you must choose another Benched Pokémon to send to the Active Spot. You may only retreat once per turn, during your turn.

    No, you can't.In order to have a Pokémon retreat to the bench, it needs to have at least as many Energy attached to it as its Retreat Cost: otherwise not enough Energy can be discarded to pay for its Retreat Cost, and it can't retreat.
  • If a Pokémon that has a Pokémon Tool attached evolves, devolves, or levels up, does the Pokémon Tool get discarded?
    No, the Pokémon Tool doesn't get discarded. Just like Energy cards and such, all cards attached to the Pokémon stay attached.
  • When I Knock Out my opponent's Active Pokémon, what happens to my own Active Pokémon?
    Even after your opponent's Active Pokémon has been Knocked Out, so long as your own Active Pokémon has any HP left, your Pokémon stays in the Active Spot.
  • Is there a rule regarding how many kinds of Pokémon to put in a deck?
    There is no set rule on how many kinds of Pokémon to put in your deck. You must, however, include at least one Basic Pokémon.Except for Basic Energy, there is a limit to how many cards with the same name you can put in your deck: 2 cards for 30-cards decks, and 4 cards for 60-cards decks.
  • Can I play by mixing cards from different products?

    No, a Pokémon doesn't get healed when it retreats. Its damage counters stay on it as it moves to the Bench. To heal a Pokémon, you can use the effect of specific attacks or items.
  • Can Pokémon only evolve in the Active Spot?
    No, Pokémon can evolve whether they are in the Active Spot or on the Bench.
  • What should I do with the Prize cards I take?
    Put them into your hand.
  • What happens to Supporter cards after they've been used?
    Supporter cards get discarded after they've been used.
