Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO Showdown 2022 Recap
After two days of competition, the first New Expansion Battle tournament has now concluded, and we have crowned Lee Keng Fai as our Champion! Let’s take a look back at the action from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A total of 72 players gathered for the Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO Showdown 2022 held in Malaysia on September 17-18.
This was be the first ever tournament in the region to introduce the New Expansion Battle format, in which every player must include in their deck at least four cards from the latest expansion. In this case, as you’ve guessed from the tournament’s name, players had to include at least four cards from the Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO expansion. This event was not a Championship Series tournament, but rather a casual open league event which everyone could join and enjoy regardless of their age and experience.
On the first day of competition, players were divided into two groups, with each group battling in a Single Elimination, Best-Of-Three format. The top eight players from each group then got to compete together in the second day of the tournament.

Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO Showdown 2022 truly went above and beyond all expectations.
The side events, such as the tutorial session, were also fully booked, with many new players attending. Most notably, we even had some new players fresh from the Friday tutorial session who joined the main tournament on the next day, with their Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO V Battle Deck (Mewtwo or Melmetal)!
Their more experienced opponents gave them a warm welcome, even assisting and teaching them about the rules during the battle –a sight you might not have expected in a competitive environment. This was also the first event in years to be open to spectators, which gave many people the opportunity to see a Pokémon TCG tournament for the first time.
