  • What is an “attack”?
    An attack is one of the skills a Pokémon has. To use attacks, Pokémon need Energy – although some attacks don’t require any Energy to use.
  • What are "Trainer" cards?
    Trainer cards can be played from your hand during your turn, in order to use the effects written on them and help your Pokémon in battle. There are 3 categories of Trainer cards: Supporter, Stadium and Item cards. During your turn you can only play one Supporter and one Stadium, but you can play any number of Item cards.
  • What is "Evolution"?
    Many Pokémon can Evolve by placing an Evolution Pokémon card on top of them. When a Pokémon evolves, its name and appearance change, its HP increases and it becomes able to use stronger attacks. Once evolved, it can't used the attacks from its previous Evolutions anymore.
  • When a card's text mentions an "Opponent", does that refer to the opposing player, or to their Pokémon?
    "Opponent" refers to the opposing player.
  • Can I use Items, a Supporter, and a Stadium all in the same turn?
    Yes, you can.
  • Some Pokémon cards don't have any numbers written in their Weakness and Resistance – how do you apply Weakness and Resistance in this case?
    If a Pokémon doesn't have any numbers written in its Weakness and Resistance, apply Weakness as "×2" and Resistance as "-30" when calculating damage from their respective types.If a Pokémon doesn't have any Energy symbols in its Weakness and/or Resistance, that means that Pokémon doesn't have a Weakness and/or Resistance, and it isn't applied when calculating damage.
  • Can I attach an Energy to a Pokémon after retreating my Active Pokémon to the Bench?
    Yes, so long as you haven't already attached an Energy this turn, you can. The player is free to choose the order in which to perform the actions available to them during their turn.
  • If I attached an Energy to my Pokémon and used its first attack, can I leave that Energy attached and then add another one to use its second attack on the following turn? In this case, after using the second attack, what happens to those Energy and Pokémon cards?
    Energy attached to a Pokémon stays attached after using an attack, unless specified otherwise. So long as a Pokémon has the required Energy attached, it can reuse the same attack any number of times.
  • Can cards from preconstructed products such as "Starter Sets" be mixed with cards from other products?
    Yes, so long as you follow the rules for deck building, you can mix and match cards from various products and create your own original deck.
  • When are coins used?
    Coins are used during Pokémon Checkup, or whenever a card's text requires you to flip a coin.
  • Once both players have finished their turn, should we decide who goes first again each time?
    No, you only need to decide who goes first once, when setting up at the beginning of the game. Once the player going first and the player going second have been decided, keep taking turns in that order.
  • When setting up for the game, how many cards should I draw as my starting hand?
    Draw the top 7 cards of your deck.
  • When setting up for the game, how should I place my cards?
    You should do as follows:1. After properly shuffling your deck, put it in its place on the top right of your field. 2. Draw 7 cards as your hand. 3. From your hand, put a Basic Pokémon in the Active position on the center of the field. 4. If you have more Basic Pokémon, you may put them onto your Bench, but you don't have to. 5. Set your Prize cards on the left side of your field. The number of Prize cards you need to set aside depends on the number of cards you have in your deck.
  • When I already have 5 Benched Pokémon, can I swap a Benched Pokémon with a Basic Pokémon in my hand?
    No, you can't. Once a Pokémon has been put in play, unless a card's effect specifically tells you to do so, you can't take it back into your hand.
  • If I have a bunch of Basic Pokémon in my hand, can I put them all on my Bench?
    No, you can only put up to 5 Pokémon on your Bench.
  • When retreating, do I need to discard Energy?
    If your Pokémon has a Retreat Cost on the bottom right corner of its card, you need to discard that many Energy attached to it in order to retreat it.
  • When I draw cards with the effect of a Trainer card, can I play those cards I just drew during this turn?
    Yes, you can. However, you can't attach more Energy if you've already attached one this turn, or play another Supporter if you've already used one this turn.
  • Can I evolve my Active Pokémon and Benched Pokémon, or several Benched Pokémon, during the same turn?
    Yes, so long as those Pokémon weren't just put into play that turn, you can evolve any number of them.
  • After Knocking Out a Pokémon with an attack, can I immediately play the card I took from my Prize cards?
    No, you can't. Since your turn ends when you use an attack, you'll have to wait until your next turn to play more cards, including the one you drew as a Prize card.
  • What happens to Item cards after they've been used?
    Item cards get discarded after they've been used.
